Ohio Assessment Letter 2

July 30, 2001

Susan Tave Zelman
Superintendent of Public Instruction
Ohio Department of Education
25 South Front Street
Columbus, Ohio 43215-4163

Dear Superintendent Zelman:

This will confirm our receipt of the Ohio Department of Education Compliance Timeline (4th Revision, 6/26/01) as requested in Stephen Moore’s letter of January 22, 2001. Ohio now has a three-year waiver of the timeline in order to complete the revision of assessments to align with new Ohio standards, to modify policy and procedures to assure inclusion of all students in assessment and accountability, and to make the necessary changes in reports.

The waiver will expire January 22, 2004. Until that time or such time as all items in the Compliance Timeline are completed (whichever comes first), the Title I office will monitor Ohio’s progress in completing the activities in the timeline.

I appreciate your cooperation in making the changes in the Ohio assessment system that are necessary to meet the requirements of Section 1111(b)(3) and 1116(a) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. You and your staff have demonstrated both a determination to comply fully with the assessment requirements of Title I and the capacity to initiate a serious and substantive response to our concerns. I look forward to working with you in support of improved learning opportunities for all students in Ohio and the nation.

Sincerely,

Susan E. Neuman
Assistant Secretary
